Pushkar Desert Safari: Timings, Routes & What to Expect

Back to all blogs

Step past Pushkar's temples and lake, and the town gives way fast, bazaars thin out, the road turns to packed sand, and you're standing at the edge of the Thar, one of the most striking stretches of desert in India. A Pushkar desert safari is where the trip actually opens up: golden dunes rolling out toward the horizon, camel bells jingling somewhere ahead, and a sky that turns from blinding blue to deep orange to a spread of stars, often in the space of one evening. Whether you're after a slow, meditative ride or a fast, dust-kicking one, the desert here has a way of doing exactly what you came for.

Types of safari

Camel safari / camel cart safari Pushkar: The classic, and for good reason. A camel safari puts you up on the camel's back for a slow, rolling ride across the Pushkar dunes, the kind of pace that lets the desert actually sink. If you're travelling with young kids, older relatives, or just want to sit back and take in the view without holding your own balance, the camel cart is the easier alternative: a shared, low seating ride pulled by camel rather than ridden.

Jeep safari Pushkar: For travellers chasing more adrenaline. An open-top 4x4 takes you dune-bashing across the sand, cresting ridges and dropping down the other side with the whole group holding on and laughing. It covers more ground, faster, and gets you to viewpoints a camel route usually won't reach.

ATV quad bike safari Pushkar: Self-driven and built for anyone who wants to be behind the controls themselves. It's the most physical of the options, closer to actually riding the dunes than being carried across them.

Horse safari Pushkar: A smoother, quicker ride than a camel, and a good middle ground for riders who want something with a bit more spirit without going all the way to a jeep or an ATV.

Most first-time visitors start with the camel, and we'd say the same, it's the ride that made Pushkar's desert famous in the first place. But if you're staying a couple of days, mixing two or three of these into your trip is the best way to see the dunes in every mood they have to offer.
